He is a second baseman who bats and throws right handed. He played baseball and basketball at Redan High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia. His number was retired in 2003 by his high school. Phillips was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1999 draft by the Montreal Expos and opted not to attend the University of Georgia.
