Mookie Betts joined the Los Angeles Dodgers via trade earlier this year, and for a few months, it looked like he might just be a one-year rental. But Betts quickly squashed any rumors when he signed a 12-year, $365 million extension in July. That will keep him on the Dodgers through 2032.

The deal comes with a $65 million signing bonus. Depending on where Betts maintained his primary residence, he could lose more than half of that in taxes.

Per Sportico , Betts will pay 37% of his salary to federal taxes. His average salary of more than $30.4 million is well over the threshold for the highest tax bracket ($518,401 or $622,051 if married and filing jointly).

Because he’ll make over $1 million annually, Betts will also owe 13.3% in state taxes to California, the highest state tax rate in the entire country. That tax comes from Betts’s game wages.

No matter what, Betts will lose more than 50% of his salary to taxes. But he can still save a ton of money if he keeps living in Tennessee. For starters, he won’t owe any state taxes on his signing bonus.

Betts currently claims Tennessee as his main residence. He’ll earn the majority of his contract while playing, but he has $115 million deferred until after 2032. If Betts stays in Tennessee the entire time, he’ll pay about $158.5 million in taxes over the duration of his earnings.

However, if he officially moves to California to be closer to his “home” team, those taxes will increase. He’ll pay $192.2 million in taxes during the same timeframe. That’s a difference of nearly $34 million.

Athletes make huge salaries, but they lose a lot of their wages to taxes, too. While federal and wage taxes (the “jock tax,” as it’s sometimes referred to) are mandatory for any athlete, they can often save millions depending on where they live.

Tennessee is one of nine states with no state income tax. By choosing to continue living there, Betts will keep a lot more of his money.

DeMar DeRozan Can Potentially Save $20 Million In Taxes Over The Next Three Years

DeMar DeRozan was the face of the Toronto Raptors for nearly a decade before being traded to the San Antonio Spurs this offseason. Though he lived in Toronto during the year, his main offseason residence was in his hometown of Compton, CA. He recently purchased a $15 million mansion in the Hidden Hills neighborhood.

But if DeRozan were to take up residence in the state of his new team, he could potentially save a ton of money.

DeRozan still has three years and $83 million left on his contract. In California, someone in his tax bracket would owe 13.30 percent of his income to state taxes. That’s a little more than $11 million for just his individual income, or about $3.7 million per year.

California also has one of the highest sales tax rates in the country. DeRozan is saving money by not buying things in-state.

Meanwhile, there’s no state income tax in Texas, so DeRozan could save millions simply by changing his address.

But wait, there’s more: professional athletes pay a “jock tax” for wherever they play games. Before being traded, half of DeRozan’s NBA paychecks were affected by Canadian tax. That’s 13.16 percent from Ontario taxes, the province in which Toronto is located.

In fact, for Canadian earners in the highest tax bracket, they pay 53 percent in taxes. That’s more than half their earnings!

DeRozan now avoids those Ontario taxes by being in a Spurs uniform.

All told, between Federal, Canadian, and state taxes, DeRozan stands to save about $20 million in taxes over the next three years if he lives in Texas instead of California.

While it’s unclear if he’ll actually make the move, it’s gotta be tempting. After all, it’s not every day you can save $20 million, right?
