Born in Seattle, Washington, in 1968, John Olerud played college baseball at first base at Washington State University. He suffered a brain aneurysm in college, but continued playing during the 1989 season and earned Pac-10 North All-League Designated Hitter honors. Olerud made his professional debut on September 3, 1989 with the Toronto Blue Jays. He played with the Blue Jays until 1996 and went on to join the New York Mets (1997-1999), the Seattle Marines (2000-2004), the New York Yankees (2004), and the Boston Red Sox (2005). Olerud’s last game took place with the Red Sox on October 2, 2005.

He is a two-time MLB All-Star in 1993 and 2001. Olerud won the American League batting title in 2993.
